Austin ISD Profile

The Austin Independent School District strives to provide “A Universe of Opportunity for Every Child.” Austin ISD includes a total of 113 campuses, providing education for 82,541 students. Among the 113 campuses within Austin ISD are 78 Elementary Schools, 17 Middle Schools, 12 High Schools, and 6 Special Campuses. Advanced academic magnet school programs are offered through Austin ISD. The magnet schools emphasize independent research and group collaboration as well as foster originality. Each magnet program has its own specific application and selection criteria.

Austin ISD is a culturally diverse school district with a demographic makeup of 12.1% African American, 3.24% Asian, 58.1% Hispanic, 2.3% Native American, and 26.34% White students. Economically disadvantaged students comprise 62.1% of the population and students with Limited English Proficiency account for 21.6% of the students in district.

Austin eighth graders participated in the Writing Test of the 2007 National Assessment of Educational Progress, the Nation’s Report Card, and scored with comparable results in relation to other large urban school districts in the United States. Of the Trial Urban Districts (TUDA), consisting of Atlanta, Boston, Charlotte, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, San Diego, Los Angeles, and New York City, Austin’s eighth grade students scored as well or better, on the average, than all of the other school districts, except Charlotte. Twenty-six percent of the Austin students taking the test scored “At” or “Above” the Proficient level. This percentage was higher than the majority of the other school districts.

The United States Department of Education has identified seven campuses within Austin ISD as National Blue Ribbon Schools. This honor is bestowed on public and private schools that exhibit academic excellence in their states or that demonstrate extraordinary gains in student achievement. The campuses identified as National Blue Ribbon Schools in Austin ISD are: Crockett High School, Lamar Middle School, Davis Elementary, Doss Elementary, Highland Park Elementary, Hill Elementary, and Pillow Elementary.

Austin ISD was rated as Academically Acceptable by the Texas Education Agency Accountability Rating System for 2007. The school district has maintained an Academically Acceptable rating each year since the TEA Accountability Rating System has been in place. The averages for Austin ISD were well above state standards in all five content areas.

For 2007, Austin had seven elementary schools that received an Exemplary rating from TEA: Baranoff, Casis Gullett, Highland Park, Hill, Kiker, and Mills.

Seventeen Austin ISD schools obtained Recognized status for 2007. The Recognized elementary schools included Barton Hills, Blanton, Bryker Woods, Clayton, Cowan, Cunningham, Davis, Doss, Joslin, Lee, Metz, Oak Hill, Ortega, Pillow, Summit, and Zilker. Bailey and Small Middle Schools were also identified as Recognized campuses.

Of the Recognized campuses, six schools: Blanton, Cunningham, Joslin, Metz, Ortega, and Pillow are Title I schools, that have high populations of economically disadvantaged students. Four campuses: Crockett High School, Dobie Middle School, Webb Middle School, and the International High School (serves non-English speaking students) achieved Academically Acceptable status for 2007 after having previously been rated as Academically Unacceptable.

In addition to the wealth of diversity and innovative programs, the tax rate for Austin Independent School District of $1.163/$100 valuation is the lowest tax rate of any school district in Central Texas.
