Austin Texas Real Estate Agents You Can Trust
Buying a Home: Overcoming Buyer's Remorse
You’ve spent weeks planning, working with your real estate agent, looking at homes, and finally the day has arrived. You have made an offer and decided to buy a new home. Throughout the whole buying process you’ve been upbeat, excited, and really looking forward to this day. Now that it’s here however, you suddenly find yourself questioning everything.
Did I choose the right house? Can I really afford it? Am I really cut out to be a home owner? The questions keep running through your head, and you can’t seem to make them stop.
What you are suffering from is called buyer’s remorse, and it is actually quite common with many types of purchases. The difference when buying a home, of course, is that you can’t take it back. This tends to lead to an even larger case of buyer’s remorse, and for some people it leads to making the mistake of not going through with the deal. Buyer’s remorse is the human tendency is to look at the negative side of things. It doesn’t seem to matter how deep your pockets are, it can happen to anyone.
Consider how many times you have something negative to say about something (or someone), compared to how many times you have a more positive outlook. Fortunately buyer’s remorse is easy to overcome. Don’t let your human tendencies lead to a mistake; take a few simple steps to overcome your fear.
Here are a few simple things you can do to overcome your worries:
- Make a List: The first thing you should do is to sit down and make a list. Focus on all of the positive outcomes of buying the home you have selected. List all the reasons that you wanted a new home in the first place. Write them all down to reaffirm your decisions.
- Drive by the Property: You were excited when you were looking at the property. That excitement lasted right through making the offer. Assuming that it is in the same area in which you live, drive by the property. This may help you to regain the excitement you felt yesterday.
- Do Something Productive: Sitting around contemplating things, is actually the easiest way to fall into a fit of negativity. Instead of worrying about it, do something! Go out and have some fun. Take a break and enjoy yourself. Go fishing, jogging, make a trip to the gym, or do whatever it is that you like. Trust that you made the right decisions, and stop trying to reason your way out of it.
Buyer’s remorse is a common problem when it comes to making a large purchase. Realize it for what it is and overcome it. Doing so may save you from making a mistake that you will regret down the road.
