Round Rock Independent School District
One of the fastest growing cities in the United States, Round Rock, with a current population of 92,000 was named as the Safest City in Texas for two consecutive years, based on a national survey of crime statistics of cities with populations of more than 75,000. Round Rock was ranked as the 13th Safest City in the U.S.
The city of Round Rock was also chosen as one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People by America’s Promise, The Alliance for Youth.
Round Rock Independent School District currently enrolls 40,000 students in its 4 high schools, 8 middle schools, 27 elementary schools, and 3 alternative campuses.
RRISD has a diverse student population with 10.3% African American, 24.4% Hispanic, 54.7% White, .4% Native American, and 10.1% Asian. Economically disadvantaged students make up 24.8% of the student population and 7.9% of the students have English as a second language.
On the Texas Education Agency’s Academic Excellence Indicator System for 2007, Round Rock ISD received an Academically Acceptable rating.
Round Rock schools receiving Exemplary ratings from TEA for 2007 included Brushy Creek, Cactus Ranch, Canyon Creek, Caraway, Fern Bluff, Great Oaks, Jollyville, Laurel Mountain, and Spicewood Elementary Schools.
Schools identified as Recognized by TEA for 2007 were Blackland Prairie, Bluebonnet, Caldwell Heights, Deep Wood, Forest Creek, Forest North, Live Oak, Old Town, Pond Springs, and Union Hills Elementary Schools, Canyon Vista, Cedar Valley, Deerpark, and Grisham Middle Schools, and Westwood High School.
Academy programs, each with a specific academic focus, are offered in RRISD within the high schools programs. McNeil High offers the Engineering and Health Science Academies. Round Rock High offers the Business and Finance, and Professional Educator Academies. The Information Technology and Science and Medicine Academies are offered at Stony Point High. The Fine Arts and International Baccalaureate Academies are at Westwood High.
International Baccalaureate Programs are offered at Anderson Mill Elementary, Spicewood Elementary, Grisham Middle, and Westwood High Schools.
Schools in RRISD that have been designated by the U.S. Department of Education as National Blue Ribbon Schools include the following Elementary Schools: Fern Bluff, Jollyville, Live Oak, North Oaks, and Pond Springs. Middle Schools honored as National Blue Ribbon Schools are Canyon Vista, C.D. Fulkes, Chisholm Trail, and Grisham. McNeil and Westwood High Schools have also received the National Blue Ribbon distinction.
Texas Monthly magazine named 18 RRISD schools to its list of High Performing Public Schools in December 2007. Included on the list were the following Elementary Schools: Blackland Prairie, Brushy Creek, Cactus Ranch, Canyon Creek, Fern Bluff, Forest North, Great Oaks, Caraway, Laurel Mountain, and Spicewood. Middle schools on the list were Canyon Vista, Cedar Valley, Deerpark, and Ridgeview. McNeil, Round Rock, and Westwood High Schools, along with Stony Point Ninth Grade Center were also recognized as High Performing Public Schools.
Newsweek Magazine named three RRISD schools to its annual list of top high schools in May 2007. The RRISD schools included Westwood, Round Rock, and Stony Point High Schools, all of which ranked in the top five percent of schools in the U.S.
Westwood High School was awarded a silver medal by U.S. News and World Report magazine in its November 2007 issue that identified America’s Best High Schools.
The Texas Business and Education Coalition named six RRISD schools to its 2007 Honor Roll. Schools awarded this honor were Canyon Creek, Fern Bluff, Laurel Mountain and Pond Springs Elementary Schools, Canyon Vista Middle School, and Westwood High School.
