South Austin is a broad region that can be broken down into two sections: 78704 is defined to the north by Lady Bird Lake (Town Lake). is defined at its borders by I-35, Highway 71, Mopac Expressway, and Lady Bird Lake. When people talk about keeping Austin weird, most likely they are thinking of South Austin 78704. You also have far South Austin which is defined with borders of Ben White, I-35, Manchaca and FM 1626 on the south. It's culturally accepted in Austin that both areas referred to as "South Austin."

The neighborhoods in South Austin are not only filled with unique architecture, they are also the home to many of the city’s artists. Creative landscaping, outdoor sculptures, murals, mosaics and other creative works fill the yards and streets of South Austin. Perhaps the quintessential South Austin feature is the Cathedral of Junk, a series of large sculptures and buildings, made entirely of junk, which has inspired many for more than a decade, even after it was temporarily shut down.

Then there is South Congress, a street brought back to life by a monthly festival called “First Thursday,” where local vendors, food trailers, and musicians come out to sell their products and help people celebrate life.
